Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape. Though they manage to find a station and head north, they are being hunted. Their first stop is South Carolina, in a city that initially seems like a haven. But the city's placid surface masks an insidious scheme designed for its black denizens. And even worse: Ridgeway, the relentless slave catcher, is close on their heels.

Six Historic Houses Within Two Miles of the Library

7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Deerfield Public Library
Meeting Room B/C

Join architect Don Wrobleski as we explore six local homes that represent the growth of modernism. Chicago is a well-known center for architecture, but while much attention has been placed on high rises, the same cannot be said of the modernist influence on single family homes. The six homes that will be discussed include Frank Lloyd Wright's last house and one designed by Wrobleski himself and represent modernism's aim for an informal interior that flowed into nature. All of the homes discussed are within two miles of the Deerfield Public Library. This presentation is in collaboration with the Deerfield Area Historical Society. Register
